Lake Forest was the home to the most important Polo game of the 20th century - the famed and fabled East - West clash of 1933.
The drama played right here at the Onwentsia Club, was set up to answer the question, " Can Westerners really play polo?" The answer was "yes" as the Westerners, from such places as Texas and California, won two out of three tense battles. Ten thousand seats were added to the fields to accommodate the crowd. Box seats sold for $5.50 and the general public was admitted for $1.10. The Chicago press covered the match extensively, right down to the arrival of every horse and player, the color of the horseflesh and the color of the goalposts. The match at the Onwentsia Club had been described as a "gleaming moment in American polo, if not the very zenith of the game in this country." ![]() Photo & Article Courtesy of Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Historical Society. |
